Who were they???

it was almost 23rd hour of night, i was returning from my office. almost empty roads of the city. some guys on their vehicle passing to make me realize that i was not in any episode of Ramsay brother's movies. but ya it was damn silence everywhere. November is November, the best weather to walk around. mildly cold breezes and very little fog due to countryside area of my office made the whole scenario little scary, for me exciting( i love to walk alone on street when there is a situation like this). but it was late enough and i wanted to be at home as soon as possible and the main street from where i would get auto was still half a kilometer away. but wow in the whole place it was me and just me. only sound which could be heard was my footsteps, sound of breeze rubbing against the leaves of trees on roadside and some barking of dogs coming from distance.
among all these exciting things, i was walking carefree. buzzing a old melody of kishore kumar and walking slowly with my hands in the locket of my jeans. suddenly i heard some voice from a narrow lane between two buildings. voices were of kids quarreling over something. in the mix voice of quarrel i could figure out, one of them saying," no i will have it."
stupidity or eagerness whatever, but i peeped into that almost dark narrow lane to watch what was happening in there. i could see two shadow like figures of kids. one looked like he was holding something. to be true, i was little bit scared but i moved in to have a look over those kids.
" i am not giving it to you." one of the kid said, hiding the thing in his hand behind him.
" i am not here to take anything from you." i said in a polite tone. " come on show me what are you hiding."
the kid forwarded his hand to show what was in his hand. now when his hands were in more light than his rest of the body, i could see there were two pieces of bread( roti ) in his hand.
these kids must really be poor and hungry to be fighting on just two pieces of bread, i thought. i smiled and put my hands in my pocket to take out some money to give to those kids so that they may have something to eat.
" take it and buy something to eat." i said , handing those money to those kids.
"keep these pieces of paper with you, what do you think we don't have it",  boy replied with a attitude as that of a kid with silver spoon in his mouth. i was shocked.

Boys brought themselves into light. well dressed, clean and tidy, no way they were poor. then why were they fighting over two pieces of bread?
i asked them directly.
one of them simply replied, " you will know."
"what?" i said in surprise.
" ya, the way this world is going you will know soon why are we fighting for this most precious thing of our time." other one said and they went back in darkness.
i was shocked, unable to figure out what those boys wanted to say. confused to a limit, i moved back to take route to main road but now i was walking faster. fast enough to be called running.
what were they? a weird imagination or our future, in which the most precious thing would be food, when there will be all agricultural companies but no agricultural land.
but what were they? our past when there was not enough money for food ... or our future when there would be no enough food for money.
